Close to Lake Vinuela, so only about thirty minutes steady drive from Nerja,
this white village is perched on a hillside.
On the way up, talking in the car, Carol said that this was the time of year
(November) to
see fruit sellers, particularly oranges, by the side of the road.
On the last bit of road before the lake....orange sellers, so we stopped and
bought a big bag, probably 10 kilos, of oranges for 6 euros.
Alcaucin has a choice of two or three restaurants and is ideal for a
ride out and a coffee or for lunch. We had coffees, local wines, a two course
meal and two bottles of bottle of wine, for 47 Euros an
enjoyable couple of hours for four people.

The village is a dead end so watch for two way traffic in the narrow street. At
the end there is a very small plaza with some extra parking just off to the
right of the plaza.
There always seems to be people queuing to fill bottles from the two water
fountains in the village, as the water here is considered to be very good for
you. I had a quick taste and it is very pure.
From the edge of the village there are views across the valley
with white houses dotted everywhere.
Directions: From Nerja to Velez Malaga, but go straight past Velez and follow
the signs for Lake Vinuela then follow the right turn which leaves the
lake on your left. The first road to the right takes you to Vinuela, don't take
this one, the next one is the one you need. Just over the bridge (Puente Don
Miguel) and take the
next left and this road will take you to Alcaucin. Driving back to the coast
we stopped at the Restaurante el Cruce (right on the turn off for Benarmagossa)
for coffee, and noticed the new barbecue was very busy, and the bar area inside
was empty of customers and only had one solitary table where there used to be
six or eight.
But, the restaurant was heaving and waiters were bringing a non stop stream of
steaks, brochette and sausages with baked potatoes covered in garlic mayonaisse
from the barbecue.
