Characters of Nerja
There are some people here who give Nerja that "Real Spain" feeling,
and no doubt in years to come they will disappear and not be replaced,
so we must enjoy them while we can.
Chalky
I guess a lot of people would call Chalky a "looky looky" man, but
Chalky speaks much better English than that! (including Spainish and
Arabic as he originates from Morroco. A regular sight in and around
Nerja for years, so at least you know that if that watch stops working
you will definitely be able to change it next time you see him.
Victoriano the singing fruit and veg man has been a regular sight in
Nerja (and at Pie Inn The Sky) for a very long time.
Victoriano is 83 and lives in the campo the other side of the autovia just
outside Nerja. He sells produce from his cortijo and what he sells changes
everytime we see him. He also has 400 goats!
When he comes in Pie Inn The Sky he usually has a present for us (this week a
big juicy lemon) but we have to give him a present in return! A glass of Casera
to quench his thirst. Victoriana sings to you when you buy something.
Maria Santiago-Santiago has been coming to Nerja on Sundays and Tuesdays for
the last forty two years to sell tablecloths and napkins.
Maria is seventy three and lives in Malaga near the cathedral. She catches the
service bus to Nerja twice a week on market days and usually calls in The Pie
Inn The Sky for a coffee and maybe a cigarette. Sadly a couple of weeks ago she
last her husband Paco Gomez who was seventy six. She said she just sat at home
crying and was missed in Nerja for a few days, but she is a strong lady and said
to herself that she should pull herself together and get back to work. Maria has
five children and they have lived and worked in the Canary Islands but now all
live back in Spain. Maria has thirty one grandchildren
If you see Maria give her a smile and maybe even buy something from her..
