Only a short drive along the coast from Nerja is Caleta de Velez, a working fishing port and marina.
You can either drive along the coast road or whizz along the motorway and take the turn off for Algarrobo/Caleta. If you take the motorway option when you get to the big roundabout (past Lidl on your left) go straight over and bear right then along to the port & marina.
If you take the coast road option drive through Torrox then El Morche on past Lagos then to Mezquitilla, Algorrobo and at the roundabout turn left.
At one end is the marina and to the west is the working fishing port where we watched a fishing boat docking but to be honest there was not a lot of fish to unload. The quay was not very busy but there is a large area behind the rows of brick huts where you could obviously bid for the catch laid out which seemed to be mostly octopus, squid and quite small fish.
There is also a huge area where you can watch the men laying out and mending their nets.
There is a great restaurant right on the Marina with a excellent value menu del dia for just 7 euros. We had pasta for starter, the fish of the day and a cheesecake for pud. The other meal was salad for starter, dorado for main and the cheesecake for pud as well.
Time to get there..20 mins easily.
