Picnic area behind the caves at Maro

Bit of a bumpy ride, and if you are really concerned about driving on tracks rather than tarmac, find or hire a 4wd. We all got up OK in ordinary cars though.
Follow the signs to the Cueva’s De Nerja and as you approach the entrance and the parking area you will see a track that heads off up to the left through some trees. About ten minutes bumping around later and here you are, a wooded area that has benches and seats, bbq’s, running water and toilets.
Used a lot by the locals you need to get there reasonably early to grab a good bbq
There is a bar here that only opens summertime, so as a rule take everything you need, as it is a long way back to town.
There are some great walks from here, generally just follow the tracks, we wandered further along the track we came up, and it takes you in a big loop, past some caves and about an hours walk and great views down the valley to the Mediterranean.
Mosquito’s are murder here in the summer, so take a couple of those citronella candles and stay close to those smoking bbqs. The area is closed to vehicle traffic at the height of the summer because of the risk of fires.
