Sierra Nevada

The Sierra Nevada is europes most southernly ski resort!
It was a rainy day in February in Nerja, so we decided to go and see the snow in the mountains, just follow the A7 towards Almeria and follow the signs for Granada. The new road from Motril has some spectacular views on the way towards Garanda.
As you approach Granada simply follow the signs for Sierra Nevada.
There was a warning sign on the motorway in Granada that snow chains were obligatory from km23 wherever that is oops, well we would go anyway and see what happens. We stopped for coffee at what looked like a small restaurant behind a service station on the left as you leave the tunnels and were pleasantly surprised to find the restaurant was a huge place with the heating on!
Anyway off we went again, climbing, climbing up and up. I guess  the village is about 1000 meters higher than Granada. On the way we saw lots of cars coming the other way covered in snow.
Km 23 is the information centre (about 4km from the resort) and cars were coming down the hill some with snow chains still fitted, although there was not any snow on the road. We got into the village without any problems even though there were ice warnings and snow poles and it was definitely a lot colder. You really have to park in the underground car park which is huge and seemed full of English plated cars.
As we walked out into the freezing cold village it started to snow and there were children building snowmen.
