Rio Frio
About an hour and a forty minute drive from Nerja, and just a further 32km from
Alhama
de Granada.
Basic directions: Nerja to Velez Malaga to Vinuela then follow signs for Alhama
de Granada, then follow signs to Loja (small section of motorway and take the
turning after the one for Loja) and here you are.
The drive up from Alhama is really very pretty with majestic mountain Vistas and
huge Olive groves mixed with corn fields. A lot of ruined farmhouses along the
way too.
The village nestles right on the river...Frio, and immediately you enter the
village there is a fairly large area to park your car (the man with the cap will
need a Euro) and there are about seven or eight bar/restaurants to choose
from, all of which serve...trout. The river here has some of the best trout
fishing in Andalucia.
If you turn left as you enter the village there is another part of the village
that you might otherwise miss, and again you can watch the fishing or have
something to eat.
There only appears to one Hostel in Rio Frio, and that was closed when we were
there but we did not find out if this was temporary or permanent.
There are walks along the river bank where you can watch fly fishing.
If you are looking for a really scenic drive and somewhere for a good lunch,
this should suit you fine. The restaurants away from the main square are
significantly cheaper!
The drive back may be a bit daunting after your lunch, so simply go back out of the village the
way you came in and join the A92 motorway to Malaga. Even though the motorway is
boring there are still some gorgeous scenery particularly on the left side, big
granite mountains bursting out of the countryside.
