Antigua Casa de Guardia
A real gem of a wine bar that is an absolute must if you are visiting Malaga.
Situated on Alameda Priciple which is the same street as the flower stalls and only a couple of minutes from the bus stop at the port.
Originally founded in 1840 it probably hasn’t had a coat of paint since then but this simply adds to the character of the place.
Malaga wine is served by the glass and price range from 1.10 for a glass of this tasty beverage, I always try at least two or three and still can’t make up my mind as to which is the best, from the less sweet (although by no means dry) Seco to the raisiny Guinda and the fabulous Pedro Ximen.
Your “tab” is simply written in chalk on the bar, well not a bar really but a long row of wooden tables with barley twist legs and very worn tops. When your tab gets too long, a simple totting up shortens the list (in case of accidental spills I guess) and when you pay, a wipe of the barmans hand and it’s gone.
Malaga wines are mainly grown to the north of Malaga in the Axarquia, but the wine making process itself takes place in Malaga.
The bar always has a steady flow of customers throughout the day and while we we there there was a party of Italian tourists who I think sampled every wine on offer!
Do It!
