Sunday 19th February 2012. To mark the end of the Nerja Carnaval (and another chance to show off your costumes) the burial of the Sardine takes place on the Sunday after the big Carnaval procession. The procession starts at Plaza de España now rather than Verano Azul. There is a misconception that the burial of the Sardine is unique to Nerja but this is not true, though the origin of the spectacle seems lost in time. There are always lots of wailing and crying and pall bearers and the odd “bishop”.
Men and women dress up in their funereal finery and there is usually a few men & boys dressed as old woman usually tripping and falling over but always rescued by friends.
After the procession has been through the streets of Nerja it ends up on Calahonda beach next to the Blacon de Europa to be put to sea and burned.
2011 programme: things start around 2pm then at 4.30 the municipal band will entertain followed at 5pm with the procession along C/Carmen, Granada, Plaza Ermita, La cruz, Pintada, Puerta del Mar and down to calahonda beach where the Sardine will be ceremoniously burned (exploded with fireworks!)
