Semana Santa
Good Friday is 6th April 2012.
Easter week is known as Semana Santa, (Saints week) The Friday before easter week sees the tronos taken to the church.
Palm Sunday: Blessing of the Palms at the Church of Senora de las Angustias, Plaza de la Ermita near taxi rank on C/San Miguel at 11:30 am followed by the procession along Calle Angustias, Pintada, Calle Puerta del Mar, Paseo Balcon de Europa to the church of San Salvador.
The next procession is on the Wednesday night 4th April from around 6pm from the church on the Balcon.
The next procession is again 9.30 after mass (6pm) from the church on the Balcon on the Thursday night, 5th April.
Good Friday 6th April, Mass at San Salvador on the Balcon at 6pm followed by a procession at 9.30pm
Easter Sunday 8th April : 11am Mass at San Salvador church on the Balcon followed by a procession at midday.
The tronos individually carry effigies of Jesus and the Virgin Mary and Saint John. A brass brand plays really mournful music, and the floats moved slowly out of the church, a very moving experience even though I am not a very religious person. The floats are obviously very heavy and need a lot of people to carry them. Some people were dressed very strangely (to me at least) with those pointed hats that I do not associate with Christianity. The origin of these pointy costumes seems to be that in the deep past wealthy people would pay someone to “do” their penitence but by dressing up no-one could tell who they were, the pointed mask helping to disguise them further by not being able to tell how tall the person really was!
A lot of the streets that the procession goes through on the Sunday are decorated with mimosa which is in full flower now and many of the balconies hang white lace from their terraces.
Monday here is just a normal day.

Going to Nerja on April 21 till 25 to see this for myself if its as good as you say I will be doing a program about it Also is the a rastro market in the area Thanks
Hi,
Is there any news on whether there is the ‘food and beer’ fair on again at Plaza Espania(behind town hall) over the Easter Holiday.
Many thanks.
Hi,
I visited Neja for the first time last Summer and cannot wait to return this July for 3 weeks ,as I too have been bitten by the “Nerja Bug”. I regulary log onto “Nerjanow” to keep up to date on what’s happening in this beautiful part of the world. Bringing the webcam images up on my screen during the dreary, Irish, Winter days brought a bit of welcome sunshine to our lives. I would love to be in Nerja for the Easter ceremonies ,but seeing the photos from previous years was great. I also enjoyed the photos of the January 6th. celebrations so thanks to all those responsible. I was lucky enough to be on the Balcon in July last year when there was another religious procession taking place. It was fabulous!
During my stay this year my husband will be celebrating a significant birthday!!! Any suggestions for a really great restaurant where we could celebrate that evening? Thanks.
