Fiesta de los Tres Reyes [reyes magos] (The Festival of the Three Kings) 6th Jan
The eve of the 6th January it is the real Christmas Eve for Spanish children, and in Nerja it is celebrated by a procession of decorated floats with people dressed up as the three Kings and children dressed in costumes, through the town, and the three kings throw boiled sweets, the occasional gift and confetti into the crowds where a mad scrabble takes place to get the sweets.
People line the streets and watch from balconies.
The date of the procession is always the same, the 5th of January, and the following day is the Spanish equivalent of Christmas Day. Small gifts are exchanged on xmas eve (24th Dec) but main gifts are given on the 6th January.
The Spanish celebration is of the arrival of the 3 kings to visit the infant Jesus.
Spanish children leave a shoe on the window-sill so the that the three Kings will know where to leave presents. The procession will leave the park at Verano Azul at 5pm then along C/Jaen thenĀ C/Diputacion, C/Granada, C/San Miguel, Plaza Cantarera, C/Pintada and ends up on the Balcon de Europa.
